Anyone can be an abuser

But the real mystery is finding out who

Abusers can be men or women, but the major of cases (93%) are males. The image of an abuser is a facade- They try to be the "good" provider, boyfriend, spouse, or father. However, they tend to have low self esteem and do not want to accept responsibility for their actions (especially violent actions). They often attempt to rationalize their behavior or blame others for it. Click a link on the left to find out more about different types of abuse.

Danger Signs

Jealousy- of your family, friends, other relationships you have had in the past and/or do not involve him

Violent Behavior- fights at parties, bars, street

Controlling Behavior- eats up all your time, won't allow you to make personal decisions; he will decide how you wear your hair or invest your money

Verbal Abuse- calling your hurtful names, putting you down in private or public

Mood Swings- "Jekyll and Hyde," you are unsure of who or what he is at any given moment, when he will be in a bad mood

Isolation- from friends, family, other people. You are afraid to be social because he might get angry

Blaming- he blames you for his problems like getting a bad grade

Unrealistic Expectations- overcritical, he expects you to be the prom queen, perfect girlfriend

Hypersensitivity- easily insulted, oversensitive, hurt

Family History- has seen domestic violence in their nuclear families, grows up to believe this is normal behavior.

Sexist Attitudes- believe in strict gender roles, women take care of him and the home
