Outside... Looking In

It was a beautiful Sunday morning. A clear blue sky, nice warm weather. She awoke to a phone call from a good guy friend of hers.

"Listen, I have a favor to ask of you... can you call my girlfriend's house and find out where she is? I have to... get some stuff done for my mom and it'd help if you could do that for me." He sounded normal. The girlfriend was a nice girl, so why not?

"Sure. I'll call you back." She hung up the phone and immediately dialed her friend's house. She got the mother, asked where her friend was. She was at church selling some stuff for a group. The mother asked how everything was and she replied it was fine. Ok, that's the end of that, she thought. She called him back and told him that his girlfriend was at church. He just hung up.

About an hour later, the phone call rang again in the girlfriend's home. The mother recognized the church's number, was her daughter ready to come home? Instead, it was a stranger.

"Ma'm, we need you to come to the church right away. Your daughter has just been assaulted by some guy and she needs help."

At the church, the assaulter looks familiar- in fact, it's the same boy who came over to countless family dinners, went camping with the brothers, and helped out at the Church. In fact, it was the boyfriend, sitting there looking unremorseful. On the other side of the hall sat the girlfriend, the daughter, crying, bleeding, and swollen like one big bruise.

Hours later, the friend receives a call. This time from a mother.

"You led him to my daughter."
"wha- what are you talking about?!"
"you told him where she was. She got slammed into a door. Thanks a lot."

A dial tone.

She drops the phone. He betrayed her. And his girlfriend. And her family.

Abuse doesn't just break the victim. Abuse hurts family and friends too.

But there's something you can do.
